The effect of the fulling process, causing the wool material to felt. Felting is the abibility of wool fibres, in certain conditions of heat, moisture and with mechanical compression, to shrink and mat together to form a compact and strong whole. The process can be carried out both on pieces (fulled fabrics) and on fibres (felt). →
Finishing process carried out especially on wool, at the end of the finishing cycle, in order to reduce the shine imparted by calendering and pressing while at the same time fixing that quality and to impart a certain degree of moisture so as to revive the fibres and definitively establish the dimensions of the fabric. →
Defect in the weft. →
One of the three basic weaves. The simplest existing weave: its weave ratio is of only two warps and two wefts. As each warp yarn intersects with each weft yarn, the fabric is tighter and stronger than any other. The two faces are identical and the surface is rather opaque. Plain weave can be full and compact, or open and loose depending on the desired result: ranging from canvas, which is very compact, sturdy, thick and waterproof, to very light gauzes and voile. Can be made from any fibre. Most frequently used in linen and cotton and for lightweight summer fabrics. →
